Additionally, proposed studies will characterize somatic signs of nicotine withdrawal reflecting the `physical' aspects of nicotine dependence. The investigation of strain differences in the expression of these emotional, cognitive and "physical" signs of nicotine withdrawal will promote our knowledge of genetic influences in the development of nicotine dependence and addiction. In summary, the proposed studies will develop measures of nicotine withdrawal that may allow assessment of potential therapeutic treatments on the emotional, cognitive and "physical" aspects of nicotine withdrawal a TRDRP research priority ; , and the potential contribution of genetic factors to the expression of the various aspects of the nicotine withdrawal syndrome. The proposed measures of nicotine withdrawal have translational value because they assess brain reward function, anxiety-like behavior, cognitive deficits and somatic signs that are believed to be dysregulated during nicotine withdrawal in humans. Thus, these studies will develop and validate experimental measures that can be used to promote our understanding of the mechanisms mediating the nicotine withdrawal syndrome, which is another TRDRP research priority.

ALTAGA 2001 INTRODUCTION Terpenes like citronellol are a large class of compounds which have in common the 5-carbon isoprene unit 2-methyl-1, 3-butadiene ; as their skeletal building block, which can be linked together in multiples of two monoterpenes ; , three sesquiterpenes ; , four, six, nine and higher Murray and Duff, 1991 ; . Chiral alcohols, carboxylic acids, esters and lactones occur widely in nature as food flavors. In most cases, only one of the enantiomers is responsible for the characteristics taste and aroma. Citronellol is a natural product that possesses in its chemical structure an asymmetric carbon Kransnobajew, 1976 ; , thus it can exist in the form of two optical isomers, R and S see Figure 1 ; . Both of them are used in food, beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, in spite of their distinct flavors Craveiro and Queiroz, 1993; Kransnobajew, 1976 ; . Citronellol is of great importance in the fragrance industry. The optical antipodes Rcitronellol and S-citronellol exhibit differents odors. SCitronellol is preferred by perfurmes. A racemic mixture of both isomers can be made easily by the reduction of the aldehyde citronella ; . This is the process adopted by industries from the essential oil of citronella Kransnobajew, 1976 ; . However, methods for the preparation of optically active R and S citronellols are not particularly efficient. There are basically two different ways to change a product from a racemic mixture to a single compound. In the first, the manufacturing process could be drastically altered so that only the desired chiral product is produced Craveiro and Queiroz, 1993 ; . An alternative solution leaves the existing manufacturing process in place and resolves the R S ; mixtures Faber, 1997; Kransnobajew, 1976 ; . The Company adopted SFAS No. 133, "Accounting for Derivative Instruments and Hedging Activities", as amended, on January 1, 2001 and its adoption has not had a material effect on the Company's financial statements. SFAS No. 133 requires companies to recognize all of its derivative instruments as either assets or liabilities in the balance sheet at fair value. The accounting for changes in the fair value i.e., unrealized gains or losses ; of a derivative instrument depends on whether it has been designated and qualifies as part of a hedging relationship and further, on the type of hedging relationship. Derivatives that are not hedges must be adjusted to fair value through current earnings. Prior to the adoption of SFAS No. 133, all of the Company's foreign exchange forward contracts were adjusted to fair value through current earnings. Periodically, the Company enters into foreign currency forward contracts to protect against possible changes in values of certain anticipated foreign currency cash flows, primarily resulting from sales outside the United States. These contracts are designated as cash flow hedges and accordingly, the gains and losses on these forward contracts are reported as a component of other comprehensive income and reclassified into interest and other income, net in the same periods during which the hedged transactions affect earnings. No portions of these foreign currency forward contracts are excluded from the assessment of hedge effectiveness, and there are no ineffective portions of these hedging instruments. At December 31, 2002 and 2001, amounts in accumulated other comprehensive income related to cash flow hedges were not material. The Company also enters into foreign currency forward contracts to reduce exposures to foreign currency fluctuations of certain assets and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies. These forward contracts have not been designated as hedges under SFAS No. 133 and accordingly gains and losses on these foreign currency forward contracts are recognized in interest and other income, net in the current period. During the years ended December 31, 2002 and 2001, gains and losses on these foreign currency forward contracts were not material.
