When the University of Maryland's women's basketball team, the Terps, defeated Duke University to win the NCAA tournament this year, Kim Lynch, a 2001 SBA graduate was there. Lynch was the manager of the team and personal assistant to coach Brenda Frese. The first year Frese and Lynch worked together the team had a 10-18 season. As the struggling program began to grow, Lynch and others saw potential. Focusing on what the players did right and creating a positive environment for the team were the keys to the Terps' success.
THE EFFECT OF NITRIC OXIDE AND PENTOXYFILLINE ON ISCHEMIA-REPERFUSION INJURY OF RAT KIDNEY E Ihtiyar, E Ates, S Erkasap, A Sahin, H Kiper Dept. of Gen Surgery, Osmangazi Uni. Hospital, Eskisehir, Turkey In this study 48 male Spraque-Dawley rats were used to study the role of pentoxyfylline pax ; and nitric oxide NO ; on ischemia-reperfusion I R ; renal damage. Right nephrectomy were performed in all rats. In addition, left ureters of 8 rats of all groups catheterisated to collect urine. Left renal pedicure clamped for 45 minutes. 30 minutes before beginning of ischemia rats were randomly assigned to one of three groups n 16 per group ; and treated with; 1 ; 1 ml of NaCI; 2 ; 300 mg kg L-arginine 3 ; 40 mg kg ptx. 8 rats of all groups were decapitoned at the 10th minutes of reperfusion for determination of lipid peroxidation by the level of malonildialdehid MDA ; by performing left nephrectomy. 120 minutes after reperfusion other 8 rats of 1st, 2nd and 3rd groups were decapitoned after taking urine and blood samples and left kidneys were preserved for histopathologic study. ClCr, FeNa and Uflow were detected by the level of Na and creatinine in blood and urine. When groups were compared with respect to MDA, ClCr and Uflow values eventhough there is no significant difference between group 1 and 2 the difference between group 3 and the other groups were found as significant p 0.001 ; . In comparison of FeNa; values in group 2 were significantly different with group 1 and 3 p 0.05 ; . When groups were compared with histopathologically, results of group 3 were found significantly better. So it is observed that Ptx has a protective effect on l R injury of rat kidney whereas L-Arginine has toxic effect by forming cytotoxic radicals.

The ways of the world today are very different from the ways of our ancestors. Before the pharmaceutical industry there were still headaches, illnesses and bacteria. Our ancestors had no choice but to seek nature's answers to their problems, looking to the plants and fruits of the earth. Natural remedies had been the only way until they were pushed aside and the age of science quickly moved its way into our everyday lives. Now we find it so routine to drive to the store to pick up a quick, convenient, over-the-counter drug or pharmaceutical. Although over-the-counter drugs and pharmaceuticals may give the relief we are seeking, there is certainly a downside to using them. We are getting much more than we acknowledge, including fillers, emulsifiers and preservatives. Advil alone has twenty inactive ingredients and only one active ingredient. Let us not forget the risks of possible side effects, which accompany every drug. For example possible side effects of Ibuprofen include: dizziness, headache, shock, hives, facial swelling, seizures, mouth ulcers, rapid weight gain, ringing in the ears, and the list goes on. If taken with other drugs, effects can become even more dangerous1 . Due to an increasing awareness of negative side effects inflicted by modern day drugs "few people today truly have confidence in conventional health care and medical science"2 . Many are seeking natural, safe remedies to alleviate their ailments without the unnecessary side effects and high costs of conventional medicine. With the growing interest in alternative medicine, studies have been performed to show that "aromatherapy can be used with an allopathic approach, often having very specific medical effects quite similar to those of conventional medicine"3 . This article will discuss safe, easy solutions to a variety of everyday health problems without unnecessary additives or side effects. Headache is one of the top ten complaints of patients seen in primary health care practices today. Up to eighty-eight percent of women and sixty-nine percent of men experience headaches caused by stress or tension in their lifetime. "Three percent of the general population.experience chronic tension-type headache, defined as more than one hundred eighty headache days per year"4 . That's half of a year! An astounding twenty-eight million Americans suffer from migraines, fiftythree percent of which require bed rest because of intensity5 . Annually, for every one thousand people, one thousand ninety workdays are lost on account of headaches3 . So what is a headache? The two main types are tension headaches and vascular headaches, otherwise known as migraines. According to the National Headache Foundation, about ninety percent of all complaints are tension headaches. Tension headaches are muscle contractions mostly caused by tension and stress. A migraine headache is caused by hyperactive nerve cells which send impulses to blood vessels causing them to constrict. They then expand and release inflammatory substances1 which cause excess pressure on the membranes surrounding the brain causing the pulsation to be painful6 . In order to effectively eliminate a headache with essential oils one needs to focus on the cause. As stated above regarding tension-type headaches, stress is a major component causing muscle contractions. "Mental stress alone can elicit muscle contraction through the limbic system"3 . Since the sense of smell is directly connected to the limbic system, one may Certified Aromatherapist rationalize that inhalation is an effective means of treatment along with absorption through the skin. Components that show antispasmodic and stress relieving capability would be favored in this case to attain desired results. According to Kurt Schnaubelt, "oils with high ester content, such as clary sage, [salvia sclarea] and Roman chamomile, [anthemis nobilis]. reduce tension in stressful situations." and are "equally effective antispasmodics."2 Roman chamomile is noted to contain eighty percent ester content making it highly antispasmodic and calming to the central nervous system2. Clary sage is also high in esters, containing seventy-five percent linalyl acetate. The oil's main effects are relaxing and antispasmodic2 . Lavender lavandula angustifolia ; would also be an appropriate essential oil. Lavender's high content of linalol and the ester linalyl acetate are attributed to its antispasmodic and sedative properties. It also has a balancing effect and relieves tension and pain2. The oil of Peppermint mentha x piperita ; is useful for headaches because of its cooling, analgesic and antiinflammatory effects 7 . These facts considered, an effective recipe to treat a tension headache would be a synergy of fifteen drops lavandula angustifolia, nine drops salvia sclarea, six drops anthemis nobilis, and two drops mentha x piperita added to one ounce carrier oil or unscented lotion applied to forehead and anywhere else pain and or stress is felt. A slightly different version would be needed for the relief of a migraine-type headache. Anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, calming oils would be fitting in this case to alleviate the painful pulsation and inflammation.

There are few skin diseases that must be seen immediately by a specialist dermatologist. In fact, most patients with an acute dermatological condition are systemically well and present to a primary care physician in the first instance. Generally, GPs prefer to manage dermatological conditions themselves, referring to specialists ; only when in difficulty. 1 Indeed, although they can be very distressing, very few dermatological conditions are acutely life-threatening. In fact, a large proportion of the general public has a skin condition of some type approximately 25% worthy of medical attention in most studies, and up to 50% of people have skin disease on examination ; .2 It is widely known by doctors and the general public that a rash can indicate serious underlying systemic illness. Therefore, the appearance of an undiagnosed rash or skin lesion can be very alarming. In our department, the acute referrals were nearly all seen by the registrar and including follow-up visits ; accounted for 25% of her total number of consultations each month. The workload included telephone discussions preceding about half of the referrals. Approximately 10% of acute referrals were seen on the ward. Referrals were usually directed at the registrar due to greater availability--but the majority were also seen by a consultant and the remainder were discussed with a consultant. If the referrer preferred to discuss the issue with a consultant, they were redirected to an available consultant. Up to eight acute referrals are booked into a specific half-day acute clinic each Friday afternoon. Others are double-booked onto existing clinics, or seen at lunchtime. Clerical, nursing, and medical staff must find the medical records, vet the referral forms, take phone calls, and see the patients. These are often complex cases that require lengthy consultation with one or more medical staff and time-consuming procedures such as skin biopsies. Our aim is to reduce the number of inappropriate acute referrals so we can give urgent specialist care to those that truly require it. Almost three-quarters of referrals in this audit did not comply with ACA guidelines-- almost without exception, the referrer had overestimated the urgency. Many referrals are non-specific for example `rash' ; , so are seen urgently in case the patient has a serious condition. GPs appeared to refer appropriately and their assessments were and anzemet

Male guinea pigs 250 to 400 g ; were sacrificed by a blow to the base of the skull and cervical dislocation and 2 cm pieces of the ileum were dissected from ileum segment 10 to 20 proximal to the ileocecal valve. Material was mounted for tension recording and allowed to equilibrate for 1-2 h in 10-ml chambers containing Tyrode solution [composition mM ; : 136.0 NaCl, 5.0 KCl, 0.98 MgCl2, 2.0 CaCl2, .36 NaH2PO4, 11.9 NaHCO3, and 5.5 glucose], pH 7.4 maintained at 37 C and bubbled with air 5% CO2 and 95% oxygen ; . In solution with elevated [K] + , [Na] + was simultaneously decreased to maintain isosmolarity 13 ; . Concentrationeffect curves for extracts were performed by cumulative addition to the bath. In experiments examining the relaxation of the basal tonus of the ileum, paired segments of ileum were set up; one piece exposed to the extract and other receiving no treatment. Relaxation was taken to be difference between the tonus of control and test segments for recording the contractions using force traducers connected to a polygraph Grass D ; as previously described 14 ; . Measurement of contractile activity After stabilization 30 min the test extracts were added to the bath. The extracts, were dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide DMSO, Merck ; . In control preparations of DMSO up to 100 l was added to the organ bath to determine whether this vehicle alone was able to induced contractions. Next, antispasmodic effect was investigated according to the following experimental schedule: a ; Hexane, chloroform and methanol extracts at concentrations of 5, 10, 20 and 30 g ml organ bath: 15 min contact period. b ; When stable submaximal responses to standard agonist histamine 3 X 10-7 M, acetylcholine 10-8 M, and barium chloride 10-4 M were obtained the extracts, were added into the bath 15 ; . Percentage inhibition of histamine, acetylcholine or barium chloride induced contraction, in the presence of extracts, were calculated for each concentration 16 and apidra.

Treating diarrhoea An antidiarrhoea medicine may be useful if diarrhoea is a main symptom. Loperamide is the most commonly used antidiarrhoea medicine for IBS. You can buy this at pharmacies but it is quite expensive ; . You can also get it on prescription which may be more cost effective if you need to take it regularly. The dose of loperamide needed to control diarrhoea varies considerably. Many people use loperamide 'as required' but some take it regularly. Many people learn to take a dose of loperamide in advance when they feel diarrhoea is likely to be a problem. For example, before going out to places where they know it may be difficult to find a toilet. Antispasmodic medicines These are medicines that relax the muscles in the wall of the gut. Your doctor may advise one if you have spasm-type pains. There are several types of antispasmodics, and they work in slightly different ways. Therefore, if one does not work well, it is worth trying a different one. If one is found to help, then you can take it 'as required' when pain symptoms flare-up. Many people take an antispasmodic medicine for a week or so at time to control pain when bouts of pain flare-up. Some people take a dose before meals if pains tend to develop after eating. Note: pains may ease with medication but may not go away completely. Antidepressant medicines An antidepressant medicine in the 'tricyclic' group is sometimes used to treat IBS. In particular, it tends to work best if pain and diarrhoea are the main symptoms. Tricyclic antidepressants have other actions separate to their action on depression. They are used in a variety of painful conditions, including IBS. ; Unlike antispasmodics, you need to take an antidepressant regularly rather than 'as required'. Therefore, an antidepressant is usually only advised if you have persistent symptoms, or frequent bad flare-ups that have not been helped by other treatments. Psychological treatments talking treatments ; Situations such as family problems, work stress, exams, recurring thoughts of previous abuse, etc, may trigger symptoms of IBS in some people. People with anxious personalities may find symptoms difficult to control. The relationship between the mind, brain, nervous impulses, and overactivity of internal organs such as the gut is complex. Some people have found such things as relaxation techniques, stress counselling, cognitive behaviour therapy, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, and similar therapies useful in controlling symptoms of IBS. Psychological treatments are generally mainly considered in people with moderate to severe IBS, when other treatments have failed, or when it seems that stress or psychological factors are contributing to causing symptoms. However, some of these treatments may not be available on the NHS in your area, or there may be long waiting lists. Other treatments Various alternative and complimentary therapies are sometimes used. For example, studies have shown that certain chinese herbal medicines, and probiotics such as Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 and Bifidocterium breve BR0 may help to ease symptoms in some cases. However, more research is needed to clarify their role and usefulness. Newer medicines that affect certain functions of the gut are also being developed and may become useful treatments in the future.

Smooth muscle cells, macrophages, T-lymphocytes, fibroblasts, mast cells, neutrophils, erythrocytes, and a variety of secreted proteins.1 An alternative has been to study vascular cells exposed to inflammatory mediators or oxidized lipoproteins in vitro.79 However, these interventions inevitably recapitulate only part of the in vivo process of foam cell formation. In this study we took advantage of established methods to simply isolate abundant pure populations of foam cells and nonfoamy macrophages from subcutaneous sponges implanted into live rabbits fed cholesterol-rich or normal chow diets, respectively.10, 11 The foam cells so generated are very similar to those in atherosclerotic plaques.11 We compared expression patterns using suppression subtraction hybridization SSH ; , which is suitable for rabbits and is able to detect lowabundance transcripts. Differential expression of genes was confirmed by semi-quantitative polymerase chain reaction PCR ; before selecting candidates for protein expression and functional investigations. Finally, we.

Abnormalities in dopamine vesicle formation20. Also markers of post-synaptic DA transmission suggest an increase in DA turnover within the striatum in DYT121. PTD can also be caused by de novo GAG deletion events22. The GAG deletion accounts for almost all mutations in torsin A9. However, a minority of patients with typical torsion dystonia do not have a mutation in Torsin A, suggesting the presence of other loci18-23-24. PTD typically begins before 26 years of age, mean age of onset 12.5 years ; . It often starts in a limb and spreads to other body parts, including trunk, neck and sometimes cranial muscles3.
